Whistling Dwarf Stonework designs and builds
stone walls, paths, patios, garden features
and interior artistic creations using
age-old Dry Stone techniques, without mortar.

Dry stone is a term used to describe building without using mortar. Almost any type of stone can be used, from round field stone to flat limestone.

In fact, the technique was developed many centuries ago in England and Scotland where farmers cleared the fields of vast quantities of rock and built endless dry stone walls to define their fields and retain their livestock.

Menno Braam, owner and operator of Whistling Dwarf Stonework, is a skilled stone mason who works with meticulous care and takes great pride in his finished product.
As you can see from the sample pictures on this page, the character of the wall can vary significantly depending on the type of stone used.

Add intrigue and wonder to a garden path

Well-built dry stone walls do not dominate a landscape, they become a sympathetic part of it. These are not merely narrow stones loosely stacked without mortar, but tightly-fitted parts of a whole. The result is a structurally stable mass which can move with the earth, adapting as required without falling down. These walls can reach a height of five or six feet, and be two or three feet thick at their base.

Because there is no mortar to crack or crumble, these walls can last hundreds of years, as attested to by the large number of walls in England and Scotland that were built by the settlers as they cleared the fields for farming, centuries ago.
